About ABIDE

The Association of Body Image and Disordered Eating is a U.C. Davis committee composed of representatives from Campus Recreation, Counseling and Psychological Services, Cowell Student Health Center, and the Women's Resource and Research Center.

This group is dedicated to raising awareness about how society might influence one’s relationship to one’s body and to food. We offer a holistic understanding of body image and healthy eating in a context that recognizes racial, sexual, gender, (dis)ability, and class identity’s influence in the University community.We believe that we can prevent and reduce eating disorders and the prevalence of body image oppression through education, outreach, support, and intervention.
This mission will be accomplished by the following:


Identify and Assess Needs
Conduct needs assessment of campus constituents.
This includes, but is not limited to:

• Review Campus Surveys
• Determine needs of campus departments
• Communicate with student leaders
• Evaluate and review ABIDE sponsored programming
Education and Outreach
Offer holistic education about body image and healthy eating in a context that recognizes racial, sexual, gender, (dis)ability, and class identity. Provide workshops, promote “National Eating Disorders Awareness Month,” conduct seminars, and develop informational materials for distribution. We aim to serve all campus constituents.
This includes, but is not limited to:
• Events for National No Diet Day
• Planning “Celebrate Your Body Week” in honor of “National Eating Disorders Awareness Month”
• Classroom presentations
• Presentations for Student Organizations (Sororities, clubs, sports teams, student employees, etc.)
• Student Leadership Development Trainings
Collaboration with the Campus Community
Create partnerships with different campus departments and organizations in order to exchange information and better implement the ABIDE mission. This includes, but is not limited to:
• Program co-sponsorships throughout the year
• Sharing of information and resources
• Classroom presentations
• Planning “Celebrate Your Body Week” events
Support and Providing Resources
Support individuals and groups in the recovery of unhealthy practices and in the development of positive body image. This is accomplished by connecting people and organizations with medical, psychological, and nutritional resources that will assist them in preventing, dealing with, or recovering from adverse health issues.
This includes, but is not limited to:
• Websites
• Community resource referrals
• Women’s Center Library
• Wellness Center services
• Nutritional counseling
• Medical evaluations
• CAPS counseling
Continue Education
Whenever possible, participate in collaborative research at the local, regional, and national level to further our knowledge and improve the quality of programs that we are able to provide to our community.
