STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AND STUDY GROUPS

Study groups formed to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) literacy, social networking, mentoring and support especially for undergraduate women students. The Math and WISE Cafés address gender issues in diverse fields, promote collaborative rather than competitive learning, and build community.

Founded in winter 2002 by undergraduates Tess Comar and Kimiko Mamiya, an international student from Japan, with the help of the WRRC. Tess expressed the initiative as “combining hard math with social justice issues, giving voice to women who have been the minority in math.” WRRC continues their support of Math Café as a part of their WISE (Women in science and engineering) initiative.
Graduate students and Faculty members of math department provide the following services:
• Mentoring
• Tutoring
• Faculty presentations


WISE Café
A 2007-2008 Initiative modeled after Math Café to provide a supportive environment for female success in STEM fields. WISE Café provides tutoring and mentoring programs with the help of graduate students and faculty members. Faculty members will give talks from different fields in order to bridge the gap in between students and faculty. WISE provides a supportive environment for women in science and engineering. • A place for study groups for math, science and engineering courses in a warm and relaxing environment for women undergrad and grad students.
• Provide advising and tutoring for undergrad students
• Tutoring and mentoring skills for grad students.
